International Religious Freedom Day

On October 27th, we observe International Religious Freedom day and reaffirm a basic tenet of human rights: Freedom of Religion.  
The idea of Freedom of Religion is enshrined in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that "everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."

Não! Este texto não é sobre religião e política. Este é um texto que repudia os que pretendem fazer da política uma religião.

O comando de campanha de Fernando Haddad, candidato do PT à Prefeitura de São Paulo, convocou alguns pastores evangélicos — de pouca expressão, é verdade — para uma reunião no diretório municipal do partido. Ali se redigiu uma espécie de manifesto daqueles poucos líderes em favor do petista. Não se toca no nome do pastor Silas Malafaia, da Assembleia de Deus, que expressou seu apoio ao tucano José Serra. Quem se encarregou de criticar Malafaia foi o próprio Haddad: “Na verdade, houve uma reação aos modos e aos termos que o pastor [Malafaia] utilizou para se referir à minha pessoa. Inclusive uma pessoa que nem é de São Paulo”. Haddad acha que religião tem de ter base territorial, entende? Haddad acha que o divino tem de respeitar fronteiras territoriais. Adiante! O líder religioso da Assembleia de Deus emitiu uma nota (ver post abaixo) apontando o que considera “as mentiras” do petista. Não! À diferença do que podem pensar alguns, não farei um texto sobre religião. Tratarei de algo até mais amplo. A ameaça feita em janeiro por Gilberto Carvalho começa a se cumprir. O PT já começou a sua mobilização para disputar influência com os evangélicos. Para tanto, decidiu provocar um confronto entre os religiosos. Por quê?

British doctors treating a Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban say she has been able to stand with help for the first time and is also able to write.

But the medical director of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where Malala Yousafzai, 15, is being treated said Friday she is not yet out of danger.  Dave Rosser said doctors are still concerned about a possible infection from a bullet wound in her head.

British television station ITV quotes a hospital spokesman as saying the shooting damaged Yousafzai's brain, but caused no decline in the brain's ability to function.  Rosser told reporters that Yousafzai is "communicating very freely and writing," but is unable to speak because of a tracheotomy tube in her throat.

Earlier this week, Malala was transferred from Pakistan to Britain for treatment.

Notícia: Menina baleada pelo Taliban é operada no Paquistão

PESHAWAR, Paquistão, 10 Out (Reuters) - Médicos paquistaneses retiraram na quarta-feira uma bala alojada no corpo de uma menina de 14 anos que foi atacada pelo Taliban por se manifestar contra a militância islâmica e promover a educação para moças.

Malala Yousufzai continua em estado crítico depois de ser baleada na cabeça e no pescoço quando saía da escola, na terça-feira. Duas outras meninas também ficaram feridas.

Yousufzai começou sua campanha contra o Taliban paquistanês aos 11 anos, época em que o governo paquistanês na prática havia cedido aos militantes o controle sobre o vale do Swat, onde ela vive.

Sua coragem fez dela uma heroína nacional, e muitos paquistaneses ficaram em choque com o atentado que ela sofreu.

O general Ashfaq Kayani, chefe do poderoso Exército paquistanês, a visitou no hospital e condenou o atentado. "Os covardes que atacaram Malala e suas colegas demonstram repetidamente como têm pouco respeito pela vida humana e como podem ser baixos em sua cruel ambição de impor sua distorcida ideologia", disse Kayani em nota.

Em nota, os militares disseram ter uma só mensagem aos militantes, enfatizada pelo uso de letras maiúsculas: "NÓS NOS RECUSAMOS A CEDER DIANTE DO TERROR".

Médicos disseram que precisaram iniciar a operação no meio da noite porque Yousufzai estava tendo um inchaço no lado esquerdo do cérebro. A bala foi retirada de perto da coluna vertebral numa cirurgia que durou três horas, e terminou por volta de 5h (21h de terça-feira em Brasília).

UN experts’ concern for religious minorities in Iran

GENEVA — Two United Nations Special Rapporteurs have expressed their deep concern at the situation of minority religions in Iran.
The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, has joined with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Heiner Bielefeldt, to call for a “thorough and independent review” of “all cases against individuals arrested and prosecuted on charges related to the enjoyment of the right to freedom of religion and belief.”
“No individual should be arrested for peacefully exercising the rights to freedom of religion and belief, expression and association,” they said.
Dr. Shaheed stressed that the arrest and prosecution of individuals for religious affiliation runs counter to the protection of minority religions in Iran’s Constitution and represents a violation of the country’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Iran ratified in 1975.
[BWNS, 23 Sep 2012 ] The Special Rapporteurs welcomed the recent release of Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, who had received the death sentence on a charge of apostasy. The experts highlighted however the arrest and detention of hundreds of Christians over the past few years and called on the Iranian authorities to “ease the current climate of fear in which many churches operate…”

“Iran possesses the basic legal framework to guarantee Christians, as a group, the right to freedom of religion, and should ensure that this right is granted in practice as well,” said Dr. Bielefeldt, who noted that “the right to conversion in this context is an inseparable part of freedom of religion or belief…”

He also called for the protection of Baha’is and other religious minorities who are not recognised in Iran’s Constitution. The cases of 495 Baha’is are still active with Iranian authorities, with some 111 Baha’is currently serving prison sentences.

The conviction of apostasy and death sentence for Pastor Nadarkhani – who was born to Muslim parents but converted to Christianity at the age of 19 – sparked strong condemnation from governments, organizations and religious leaders around the world. In October 2011, the Baha’i International Community issued a statement in his supportdescribing the sentence as “reprehensible” and “a violation of every legal, moral, spiritual and humanitarian standard.” Earlier this month, Pastor Nadarkhani’s charge was reduced to “evangelizing Muslims,” and his sentence to three years, which he was credited with having already served.
